The attack in Wollega and Benisahngul claimed to have systemic support. Not only does the Benishangul Gumuz state regional peace and security office lack the capacity to defend ethnically-based attacks that are turning into ethnic cleansing, it also has no interest in doing so, says one of Ethiopia’s opposition parties. , the National Movement of Amhara.

The Oromo and Benishangul regions of Ethiopia appear to make headlines in state media very frequently for taking action against extremist groups in the region with the claim that “hundreds of anti-peace forces have been killed.”

In reality, the security situation in these regions does not appear to be progressing much. As in the past, the main targets are the Amahra ethnic group and recently the Agaw ethnic group.

The new reports of massacres are of both ethnic groups in Wellega, in the Oromo region, and in the Benishangul Gumuz region of Ethiopia. It happened in the last two days.

The number of victims of what are believed to be ethnic cleansing attacks is not specified.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and his Vice Demeke Mekonen have yet to speak about it. The images are graphics showing the bodies of the victims, including children. In October this year, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was said to have instructed the security forces to end the violence in the Benishangul Gumz region. However, there were at least three attacks against the Amhara ethnic group in the region after he gave “order to stop the violence in the region.”

The federal and regional governments have been criticized for not taking the recurring massacres in both regions for what they are: a systemic ethnic cleansing of the Amhara ethnic group.

Systemic because it has been proven that there has been a participation of government officials in both regions that seems to have facilitated the murders. The extremist forces involved in the recurring killings receive structural support, be it legal or administrative.

A few months ago, around 45 senior government officials were purged or arrested in the Benishangul region with the massacre of the Amhara ethnic group.

The National Movement of Amhara (NaMA) has issued a statement on the latest ethnic cleansing. For NaMA, the government is not only unable to ensure the safety of citizens, which is the basic duty of the government, but the government authorities also provide protection to extremist forces in these regions.

Most of the killings in these regions were related to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), a party that is no longer in a coordinated position after a crushing defeat by the Ethiopian Defense Forces.

NaMA claims that extremist forces in the Benishangul Gumuz region (including the government structure) have gained a new form of support, although the identity of the support group is not explicitly mentioned. However, it is observed that the ethnic cleansing in both regions is based on ideologically rooted hatred towards the Amhara ethnic group and legal and administrative support for it.

“It is imperative that all the Amhara people, the regional states of Amhara and the political organizations of Amhara take a firm position to reverse the attack on the Amhara people,” NaMA said.

Furthermore, he called on the federal government and the regional state of Amhara to oppose the attack in both regions and take action. “If the government does not defend the people, the people of Amhara will turn to natural law to defend themselves,” it was said.
