The federal prosecutor told Arada the federal prosecutor on Thursday that Keriya Ibrahim could be released on bail. He was among the top leaders of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front and a member of the Executive Committee.

She was detained after she surrendered to the Ethiopian Defense Forces following a military operation against the leaders of the TPLF and its 250,000 forces, a campaign that the Ethiopian government called a “law enforcement operation”.

In addition to her role within the TPLF, she served as Speaker of the Federation Chamber (Ethiopia’s upper house) until she resigned in June 2020, as the gap between her party and the federal government led by Abiy Ahmed worsened by postponed elections and other policies. issues.

She remained in detention as part of the investigation into links with the TPLF leadership that organized a military force that attacked the northern command of the Ethiopian Defense Force on November 4, it was said.

The Federal Prosecutor also granted bail to three other TPLF officials. President of the Tigray Region Court, Hirti Mihreteab, Advisor to the President of the Tigray Region, Woldeghiorghis Desta and Amdemariam Tessema.

According to a state media report, the US Attorney said the investigation into the aforementioned TPLF officials did not reveal any wrongdoing.

Keriya Ibrahim is released for similar reasons. All were required to post bail of 30,000 Ethiopian Birr.

The reaction of Ethiopians on social media is rather disapproval of government measures, especially in relation to the release of Keirya Ibrahim.

Some speculate, however, that the government may have a political reason behind his release.

About 21 high-level leaders of the TPLF, including one of the organization’s founders Sebehat Nega and the former vice president of the Tigray region, Addis Alem Balema, are in custody. At least four other key leaders, namely Seyoum Mesfin, Asmelash Gebreselassie, Abay Tsehaye and Zeray Asgedom, were killed during the military operation, the Ethiopian government announced.
