About 120 rebels who are part of the armed group that has been carrying out ethnically motivated massacres in Ethiopia’s Benishangul Gumuz region surrendered to the Task Force organized to restore peace and security in the region, state media reported, the Ethiopian News Agency.
They surrendered in the region’s Metekel Zone, Mandurah district, which is where more than 500 innocent civilians have been massacred in a span of six months, the Ethiopian Human Rights Council confirmed.
The task force is comprised of commanders from the Ethiopian Defense Forces of the Western Command.
Colonel Fasil Yigzaw, Western Command Chief of Operations, spoke words of encouragement to those who surrendered. “It is commendable that he chose to surrender peacefully after learning that the decisions he made were wrong. And now he must participate in the effort for peace and development in the area, ”he said.
Elders from the region, the intelligence department of the Ethiopian Defense Force and the National Intelligence and Information Services (NISS) collaborated in the work to plead with the rebels.
Two of the rebel leaders who surrendered, Lakew Dereje and Addisu Fetene, are said to have confessed that they were trained by the TPLF in Mekelle and sent back to the Benishangul Gumuz region.
TPLF was involved in the coordination and financing of massacres and mayhem in different parts of the country.
