Qualcomm already has its hands in the audio technology space with its audio chipsets and codecs like aptX. Now, he wants to take things a step further by enhancing the audio experience of the devices with what he calls Snapdragon Sound.
The press release says that Snapdragon Sound “is designed to deliver immersive and comprehensive audio experiences to devices by optimizing audio technologies and software across the chain.” It will combine existing Qualcomm technologies in audio, connectivity and mobile devices, and then optimize them to work together to solve existing audio problems. The goal is consistent quality sound, reliable connectivity, and low latency.
Qualcomm says Snapdragon Sound makes use of its aptX Adaptive Audio technology to deliver audiophile-quality music wirelessly from phone to wireless earbuds or headphones. It also uses Qualcomm’s Aqstic audio codec to provide equally impressive audio quality for those who prefer to listen directly from their mobile device. Snapdragon Sound will also provide a smooth listening experience when you are in a crowded place with many smart and connected devices. Faults are common when found in such areas and are caused by interference from surrounding devices.
Snapdragon Sound will not only focus on output sound, but will also use existing Qualcomm technologies to enhance input sound when making voice and video calls. Features like noise suppression and echo cancellation will use artificial intelligence to provide crystal-clear audio for calls. The audio solution will also use Qualcomm’s aptX Voice Audio to provide better sound quality (higher voice clarity and speech intelligibility) when using Bluetooth accessories.
Qualcomm boasts that Snapdragon Sound will also be able to deliver latency as low as 89ms when using Bluetooth audio devices during games. You can achieve this by using aptX Adaptive audio technology between the mobile device and the Bluetooth accessory.
The press release says that the products (headphones, earphones and mobile devices) will have a Snapdragon Sound badge so that consumers can identify which products work best together. Qualcomm says it will thoroughly test the performance of these devices in terms of latency, quality of voice calls, quality of music, and robust connectivity.
