Vladimir Putin is set to sensationally resign as Russia’s president in a matter of weeks amid concerns that he has Parkinson’s disease, according to reports.
The politician and former KGB official is being urged to resign from his post held since 2012 by his girlfriend, gymnast Alina Kabeva and their two daughters, sources in Moscow have said.
A video showing the 68-year-old’s legs shaking as he clung to a chair had raised suspicions about his health.
In the recent clip, a pen appeared to move in his hand, while a cup was filled with painkillers, analysts told The Sun.
Kabeva, 37, and Putin’s daughters Maria Vorontsova, 35, Katerina Tikhonova, 34, allegedly begged the leader to resign, said critic, Professor Valery Solovei, the newspaper reported.
“There is a family, he has a great influence on him. He intends to make his transfer plans public in January,” Professor Solovei said, adding that a new president will be “prepared”.
It comes after legislation, introduced by Putin himself, was forced this week to make him a senator for life, guaranteeing legal immunity.
RT’s state media suggested it was a “sign that the groundwork is being laid” for an eventual “transition of power.”
There has been previous speculation that Putin might have Parkinson’s, and his asymmetrical arm swing is described as “gunman walking,” a telltale sign according to the British Medical Journal.
However, Putin has always projected the image of a strong man who regularly participates in horseback riding, wrestling and other physical activities.
His spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that speculation about the leader’s health is “quite unjustified.”
