If WhatsApp is a regular part of your daily smartphone use, you may want to make sure your operating system is up to date. If not, you could lose access to the app in its entirety when the new year rolls around.

TechRadar reports that WhatsApp has confirmed that support for older devices will end on January 1. That means that if you haven’t updated to iOS 9 or higher on iPhone or Android 4.0.3 or higher on Android, you might see the app shut down. That is the worst case. Other users may lose access to some functions of the application.

To avoid this unpleasant result, make sure that the device you are using is as up to date or as up to date as possible. You’ll also want to check your version of WhatsApp to make sure it’s up to date as well. If your operating system version is already higher than iOS 9 or Android 4.0.3, you can be sure that your access to WhatsApp is secure.

Your device may not be able to update where WhatsApp will still be supported. If that’s the case, you may need to switch to a new phone to continue using the app. That might be your only option.

This is not something localized only for WhatsApp. Applications “outperform” devices quite often. These versions of the operating system are much older. This is why it is important to keep up with software updates and purchase new phones or tablets over the years.

For those who cannot keep using WhatsApp on older devices, there is a silver lining. At the moment, you should be able to access the application through a PC. However, it is recommended that you pick up a new phone soon. Otherwise it will be blocked sooner rather than later.
