Sony has told us almost everything imaginable about its next-generation video game console, the PlayStation 5. We know of its lineup of launch games, including the highly anticipated superhero sequel Spider-Man: Miles Morales. We know the devices have a futuristic feel to them, with curved sides that could look right at home next to a Star Trek ship. We even know that the controller has special activation buttons that give us information so that the objects we interact with in the game world feel as if they are here, in our hands.
The only thing we don’t know is how much it will cost and when it will hit store shelves.
Until now. The company announced will charge $ 399.99 for its “digital edition” no disk drive, and $ 499.99 for its version with one. Sony said both consoles have the same chips and other hardware inside. The device will launch on November 12 in the United States, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea, and on November 19 in the rest of the world. Preorders will start on thursday.
Sony started their event by discussing high-profile games Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Final Fantasy 16, both exclusive to PlayStation. Spider-Man will launch with the console in time for the 2020 holiday shopping season, while Sony did not say when Final Fantasy 16 will be released.
The company also showcased Resident Evil 8: Village, a new installment in the popular horror franchise, and teased a new sequel to its hit 2018 action-adventure game God of War.
Now, with the release date and price announced, the upcoming consoles from Sony and Microsoft mark a watershed moment for the video game industry, with the transition to new devices that promise faster chips and new features to make games much more complex or realistic looking.
Somehow, Sony and Microsoft have been comically delayed in their preparations for their dueling next-gen consoles without telling us fundamentals like price and release date. At the beginning of the year, all we knew was that the devices would launch in the holiday shopping season.
The missing information became something of an inside joke every time he spoke to the teams at Sony and Microsoft. I would work on the question as often as I could, reminding them that I have to ask, and acknowledging that of course I would ask. PlayStation boss Jim Ryan and Phil Spencer, Xbox Director I also have the question.
The lack of information became a meme within the gaming community, where rumors emerged that Microsoft and Sony were playing chicken, seeing who would blink first and announce their price at the risk of the other adjusting their price to beat it. For what it’s worth, both companies repeatedly denied it.
But after a series of leaks about Microsoft’s entry-level Xbox Series S that will launch alongside its more powerful Xbox Series X, the company said. would cost $ 299.99 and $ 499.99, respectively, and would launch on November 10. They will also be available with a payment plan of $ 25 per month and $ 35 per month, including access to a package of the company’s social gaming network and other subscription services.
To take on Microsoft more head-on, Sony also announced its PlayStation Plus Collection, a library of hit PS4 games like God of War and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. The games will be available to subscribers to its PlayStation Plus gaming service for $ 9.99 per month.
From Microsoft $ 9.99 per month Xbox Games Pass The service has often been called “the best game deal”, for offering more than 100 games. Now Sony clearly wants to assume that. Sony did not offer a direct competitor to Microsoft’s $ 14.99 per month Xbox Games Pass Ultimate subscription, which offers access to many of the games in its library on console and PC, as well as the ability to stream many of those titles too.
