We don’t know when PS5 will arrive. All that Sony has said about the release date of its next-gen console is that it will arrive during the Holiday season 2020.
But we may have had a better idea of where The PS5 will debut first, and Sony’s own marketing materials may be to blame for informing us of plans for a phased global launch.
Twitter user Riga van Wyk look a Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War trailer uploaded to the official PlayStation YouTube channel before it was quickly removed earlier this week. The trailer showed the different digital editions of the game. Interestingly, it also stated that the PlayStation 5 would be available to players in the US and Canada for the 2020 holidays and “the rest of the world” by the end of 2020.

Since van Wyk broke these details on Twitter, the original trailer was set in private. There is a new version from the trailer, but the shipping information is nowhere to be found. The same wording can be found in the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War official website, However. The website notes that the PS5 version of the game is “scheduled for release at Holiday 2020 in the US and Canada” and reiterates “late 2020” for the rest of the world.
Sony has posted any official comments, but given the company’s relative silence on additional PS5 launch matters, this new release schedule could be a very real possibility. That said, it would contradict an earlier statement by Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan, who said GamesIndustry.biz that the console would launch “globally” this holiday season.
Previously, the UK version of Sony’s own PS5 product page had altered the console’s release date to the second half of 2020 since the 2020 holiday. The US version has not been altered. It is possible that Black Ops Cold War could be the only part of the equation that has been staggered, but it seems unlikely that Sony will also change the information on its official pages and then rush to remove the messages from the Call of Duty trailer.
With the holiday season looming, we’d expect more clarity from Sony soon on a release date for the PS5. Earlier this week, a rumor pointed to a PS5 event on September 9, and while it’s unclear if that rumor is based on reality, we hope to find out the release plans as soon as possible.
