This week, Sony released PS4 system software update 8.00, raising a lot of concern among gamers due to a new message that appears once the update is installed.
As The Verge reports, images began to appear on Twitter of PS4 owners proclaiming that Sony was now recording voice audio during party chats. The message that appears on the screen says: “Voice chats can be recorded for moderation. By joining, you agree to have it recorded.”
Sony did itself no favors by not mentioning the voice recording feature in the release notes for the software update. That soon changed once concern grew online. PlayStation.Blog updated the announcement of the 8.00 system software update to clarify the situation and the feature:
“After this update, users see a notification about Party Safety and that voice chats at parties can be recorded. Voice chat recording for moderation is a feature that will be available on PS5 when it is released and will allow users to record. your voice chats on PS5 and submit them for moderation review. The popup you are seeing on PS4 right now is to let you know that when you chat with a PS5 user (after launch), you can submit those recordings from your PS5 console to SIE “.
So voice recordings won’t happen until after the PlayStation 5 launch, and only for PS4 owners if they end up chatting with someone who is using a PS5. Even then, the chat is only shared with Sony if the PS5 user decides to do so. The 8.00 system update also ties Party and Messages more closely, added new avatars to use in profiles, made it easier to mute all microphones from the Quick Menu, simplified parental controls, eliminated event creation and event creation functions. private communities, and improved two-step verification by adding support for third-party authentication applications.
