Sony’s PlayStation 5 is, or should be, on track for its November 14 release, despite an almost comical but disastrous pre-order phase last month. Despite starting pre-orders, Sony has yet to reveal everything buyers need to know about the next-gen console, and it still leaves some parts to the imagination. However, some videos and photos coming from Japan thankfully put some of those things in perspective, but still leave some crucial details shrouded in mystery.
The size of the PS5 will likely be the first thing people will talk about, especially since it is the first thing they will notice alongside the unconventional design. Shown in hands-on videos alongside people and televisions, that size can be a problem for those who prefer their consoles hidden away, often hidden from view.
You will definitely need to prepare some space for the PS5, especially if you want it to stand upright. You can place it horizontally, as 4gamer shows, but it almost looks less flashy that way. Fortunately, hands-on testers described the console as fairly quiet, so at least it won’t make unpleasant fan noises.
A few words were also said about the new DualSense controllers, not DualShock, which exchanged noise vibrators for haptic feedback. It also includes adaptive triggers that can dynamically adjust their resistance based on the game or context. Interestingly, Sony is now mapping the X button to commit action in Japan as it does elsewhere, which could lead to a lot of confusion for longtime PlayStation gamers.
Unfortunately, these hands-on experiences, which were conducted under Sony supervision, of course, do not reveal everything. Things like the new PS5 user interface, as well as storage expansion, remain unknown, perhaps reserved for previews and reveals in the coming weeks before the console starts shipping.
