Sudanese protesters closed the southern port of Sudan on Sunday in protest against a recently signed peace agreement with rebel groups.

On Saturday, the Sudanese transitional government signed a power-sharing agreement with the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF), an alliance of rebel groups, during a ceremony in Juba, the capital of South Sudan.

Protesters closed three doors leading to the port in protest of the agreement, Abboud el-Sherbiny, head of the Sea Ports Authority, told Anadolu Agency.

The agreement “does not represent the people of eastern Sudan and we are against reliance on the foreign agenda,” he said, without explaining.

El-Sherbiny promised to continue the protests “until our demands are met by scrapping the deal.”

In a statement, the Syndicate Corporation of the Seaports Labors workers union released a statement announcing a one-day strike to express its rejection of the agreement.

Protester Awad Ahmed also spoke to Anadolu Agency and said that the protesters had closed the main road linking Port Sudan to the rest of the country.

Saturday’s deal followed a year of talks and came a few months after an initial deal was reached on August 31. It addresses issues related to the distribution of wealth and power, political and national affairs, security agreements, land ownership and related disputes.

Other topics include justice, equality, reconciliation and compensation in the Darfur, South Kordofan and Nuba Mountain regions.

Two large rebel groups, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement / Army of the North (SPLM / AN) and the Sudan Liberation Movement / Army (SLM / A), are not part of the peace agreement.
