Tigray-ProsecutorsOctober 4, 2020 (Ezega.com) – Prosecutors in Ethiopia’s Tigray region will hold a labor strike on Monday over alleged political meddling and pressure from their superiors, according to reports.

Prosecutors anonymously told the Ethiopian Press Agency (EPA) that the regional government has continued to meddle in their jobs, negatively affecting their lives and careers.

“The interventions of the government in the region are many, but the main ones include the denial of professional freedom, unfair remuneration and the dismissal of jobs,” they said.

According to prosecutors, escalating living conditions coupled with political interventions negatively affect their professional freedom and serve the Tigray of the people fairly.

“Prosecutors in the region are less paid than prosecutors working in other parts of the country and the regional government turned a deaf ear despite repeated requests for a salary increase. Our salaries have been much lower than what judges earn in the Tigray region, ”they said.

Meanwhile, Ethiopia’s Federal Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission will file lawsuits against a minister, 10 ministers of state and 174 government officials from the Addis Ababa city administration for failing to declare their assets according to Proclamation No. 668 / 2002 of the country.

The officials were supposed to disclose their personal assets until Friday, October 2, 2020. The commission in a recent report said that most government officials have not registered their assets despite repeated calls from the commission.

Ethiopia is the 96 least corrupt nations out of 180 countries, according to Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index 2019 report.

The range of corruption in Ethiopia averaged 109.16 from 2000 to 2019, reaching a record high of 138 in 2007 and a record low of 59 in 2002.

The commission’s Asset Declaration and Registration Director, Mesfin Belayneh, told local media that the commission has released a list of the names of a minister, 10 state ministers, and 174 officials of Addis Ababa city government officials. to the federal attorney general to hold them accountable for breaking the law. proclamation.

Mesfin said the commission had once again extended the period during which officials were required to register their assets, but refused to do so despite repeated calls.

Government officials were advised to register their wealth between September 28 and October 2, 2020 as the latest deadline along with a fine of 1,000 Ethiopian Birr for each day.

The commission’s mandate, including the right to investigate and press charges against suspected corruption, has been assumed by others following the parliament’s decision in mid-2018 and its role in bringing the corrupt to justice remains weak.
