The Proclaimers are supporting a new Mary’s Meals campaign to double the love.

Scottish rock duo Craig and Charlie Reid have supported the charity founded by Dalmally for several years and have taken time to write their next album to help the charity with their latest fundraising launch.

The new Double The Love campaign officially launches today, Monday 2 November, and will see the UK government match public donations to the charity until January 31 next year, up to £ 2 million.

It means that the funds raised through Double The Love will allow Mary’s Meals to reach more than 43,000 hungry children in Bong County, Liberia, with a life-changing school meal.

In Liberia, more than half of all boys drop out of school before completing primary education and 64% of girls do not attend school. The charity believes that the nutritious food that it funds and is prepared by local communities draws children into the classroom and gives them the energy to learn.

Half of The Proclaimers Craig said: “We think the work Mary’s Meals does is fantastic. We have been following their incredible impact for years and now we are delighted to be able to support their campaign to feed more starving children in Liberia. ‘

And twin brother Charlie added: “Over the next few months the UK government will double donations from people, which means supporters can double the impact of the pounds they are giving.

“This year has been difficult for everyone in different ways, but in the same way that music brings people together, Double The Love offers a brilliant opportunity for all of us to support Mary’s Meals and show children in Liberia that we care.” .

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, children have continued to eat Mary’s Meals outside of the classroom thanks to the safe distribution of food in the community to prepare and eat at home.

As schools in Liberia reopen, the charity is working closely with governments and local communities to ensure that children still safely receive the promise of a nutritious daily meal.

Daniel Adams, CEO of Mary’s Meals, said that many families in Liberia face a relentless daily struggle to feed their children and the Covid-19 pandemic has only added to these daunting challenges.

Using the charity’s low-cost approach, a donation of just £ 15.90 will feed one child Mary’s Meals for an entire school year and with funding from Double The Love from the UK government, the same amount will feed two children. for the next few months.

In such a challenging year, this generous supplemental funding from the UK government offers an incredible opportunity for all of us to work together to transform the lives of many more starving children in Liberia. Through the dual gift of food and education, the hungry children of today will be able to become the educated adults of tomorrow who can lift their communities out of poverty, ”added Mr. Adams.

Worldwide, Mary’s Meals reaches more than 1.6 million hungry children in 19 of the poorest countries with a nutritious daily meal. The charity has been working in Liberia since 1994 and already serves meals to more than 150,000 children across the country.
