Following some pretty grim trailers, Netflix has released the official trailer for their actual showdown of The crown, and it is highly recommended to stock up on Kleenex before viewing it, depending on AND! On-line.
Several seconds into the clip, Gillian Anderson appears as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, one of the most polarizing political figures in UK history. “Your Majesty, I think we respect each other personally enough to ask each other some of the most important questions, woman to woman,” she tells Olivia Colman’s Queen Elizabeth II.
Their exchange of seconds hints at how the real-life figure stood firm in declaring herself a force to be reckoned with.
And while Thatcher lists all the reasons she believes she is successful as prime minister, the queen is quick to point out the “unemployment, recession, crises” that have arisen under her reign.
As the clip progresses to promise a tense dynamic between these two, spoiler alert, the jury is out on how the creators will approach the years that led to Thatcher’s actual resignation in November 1990.
With that said, the trailer goes on to highlight the devastating love-hate relationship between Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor) and Princess Diana (Emma Corrin), as the duo take center stage in the second half of the trailer.
It also shows Prince Philip (Tobias Menzies) reminding Charles of his obligation to the crown: “One day, dear boy, you will be king. Your duty now is to choose a woman whom the people will love as a princess, and in due course of course, as queen. “
We then see Corrin take on the glamorous role of Diana, posing for the paparazzi and walking through Buckingham Palace in a replica of David and Elizabeth Emanuel’s iconic wedding dress that she wore to get married. Perhaps the most painful look of what is to come is evidenced in a voice-over by Diana de Corrin, who tells Queen Elizabeth II, “All I want is to be loved. It’s all we all want from you.” .
But speaking of Diana in another scene, the Queen Mother (Marion Bailer) says: “In time, she will give up her fight and bow like everyone else.” Helena Bonham Carter’s Princess Margaret chimes in and adds that if it doesn’t bend, it will “break”. And that’s the series that hints at some dark secrets right there.
Towards the end, the trailer shows snippets of fights and drama between Diana and Charles, their affair with Camila Parker Bowles (Emerald Fennel), and Thatcher’s final downfall.
According to Netflix’s official description of the fourth installment, the next season begins in the late 1970s through 1990, an “increasingly divided” time for the royal family. The cast also includes Erin Doherty as Princess Anne, Georgie Glen as Lady Fermoy, Tom Byrne as Prince Andrew, Angue Imrie as Prince Edward, Charles Dance as Lord Mountbatten, Stephen Boxer as Denis Thatcher, Rebecca Humphries as Carol Thatcher and Freddie Fox as Mark. Thatcher.
