Britain’s Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, on Thursday launched a new £ 50 million Earthshot award, aimed at funding the most innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.

The 38-year-old second in line to the British throne said five prizes worth £ 1 million each will be awarded over the next 10 years, providing at least 50 solutions to the world’s biggest environmental problems by 2030.

“The plan is really to galvanize and bring together the best minds, the best possible solutions, to solve and address some of the world’s greatest environmental challenges,” Prince William said.

“We have to take advantage of our ingenuity and our ability to invent. The next 10 years are a critical decade for change. Time is of the essence, so we believe that this ambitious world award is the only way to go, “he said.

The launch, backed by popular British broadcaster and conservationist David Attenborough, comes after two years of work by Prince William and the Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, his wife Kate Middleton, to develop a project that will support the effort. global effort to protect and restore the environment.

In addition to identifying evidence-based solutions to the biggest environmental problems facing the planet, the new award aims to turn current pessimism around environmental problems into optimism that we can face the greatest challenges of our time.

Speaking to the BBC, the king said it was his way of carrying out the work of his grandfather, Prince Philip, and father, Prince Charles, in the field of conservation.

“I really feel like we’re at a tipping point and I want to make sure that my grandchildren, my children, and my grandchildren actually, because it’s going to happen relatively quickly, we deliver the planet in a better state than we found it.” he said.

The Earthshot Prize has been listed as the largest initiative to date by both Prince William and the Royal Foundation and was first introduced in December last year, with nominations now opening from November 1.

Taking inspiration from the Moonshot of former US President John F. Kennedy. which united millions of people around an organizational goal to put man on the moon and catalyzed the development of new technologies in the 1960s, the Earthshot Prize focuses on five “Earthshots”, simple but ambitious goals for our planet , that if they are achieved in 2030 it will improve the lives of all of us, of future generations.

The five Earthshots featured this week include protecting and restoring nature; clean our air; revive our oceans; build a world without waste; and fix our climate.

Every Earthshot is backed by scientifically agreed goals, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals and other internationally recognized measures to help repair our planet. Together, they form a unique set of challenges rooted in science, which aim to generate new ways of thinking, as well as new technologies, systems, policies and solutions.

By bringing together these five critical themes, the Earthshot Prize organizers say they are recognizing the interconnectedness between environmental challenges and the urgent need to address them together.

Awards could be awarded to a wide range of individuals, teams, or collaborations (scientists, activists, economists, community projects, leaders, governments, banks, businesses, cities, and countries), anyone whose viable solutions contribute substantially to achieving the shots in the Earth.

Each year from 2021 to 2030, Prince William, together with the Earthshot Prize Council covering six continents, will award the Earthshot Prize to five winners, one for Earthshot.

In addition to the Award Council, the Earthshot Award will be supported by its Global Alliance, a network of organizations around the world that share the Award’s ambition to repair the planet.

The five-stage awards process for selecting a winner for each Earthshot has been designed in partnership with the Center for Public Impact and a variety of international experts.

Every year, between 2021 and 2030, an award ceremony will be held in different cities around the world, in which the five winners of each of the Earthshots will be selected from 15 finalists. The first awards ceremony will take place in London in autumn 2021.

Following the awards, each winner will receive a global platform and prestigious profile, with their stories to be showcased throughout the decade and the ambition that their solutions lead to mass adoption, replication and scaling. The £ 1 million prize will support environmental and conservation projects agreed upon with the winners.

Shortlisted nominees will also receive personalized support and opportunities to help scale their work, including connecting with an ecosystem of like-minded individuals and organizations.
