President Donald Trump addressed the UFC’s return to action in a special video that opened the UFC 249 broadcast on ESPN on Saturday night.

As the first major sport to return to action after the coronavirus pandemic began, Trump offered words of support for UFC President Dana White and promotion for the show to be held in Jacksonville, Florida.

“I want to congratulate Dana White and the UFC, they are going to have a great game.” We love it, “Trump said during his speech.” We think it’s important. Recover sports leagues. Let’s play.”

As many states begin to reopen for the first time since orders to stay home were issued, Trump has defended the restart of sports as a sign that the United States is returning to a certain sense of normalcy.

The UFC will hold three consecutive shows over the next week with two more cards planned for May 13 and 16 from Jacksonville. Other sports leagues have begun drawing up plans to restart their own seasons with the UFC already back in business.
