PlayStation 5 will reportedly have 664GB of usable internal storage at launch

As we get closer to the launch of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, little by little more details about the next generation consoles begin to appear.

Along with some early PS5 UI images, we now know that the console’s internal storage will be over 100GB from launch.

This comes from a ResetEra thread looking at the PS5’s storage, showing a console that is already configured with the operating system and Astro Game Room installed, which will be the case for all launch units. The initial 825GB internal SSD will apparently drop down to about 768GB via conversions, and will actually settle at around 664GB of usable space if the OS is taken into account.

That basically means gamers are losing almost 200GB since launch, with just one game installed on the console, which is what most people expected. However, since the leak reportedly came from a dev kit version of the console, these numbers could still change before launch.

That Astro Game Room The file size is also likely to be a bit larger at launch, either due to updates or because the version of these leaked images is a demo of some kind.

It has already been confirmed that the X Series will go from 1TB to around 930GB after conversion, with a final size of around 802GB remaining after the operating system is configured.

So unless Sony and Microsoft suddenly find ways to match Nintendo’s file compression methods to efficiently reduce storage sizes, this could end up being a problem up front due to most titles being older. Large ones occupy between 25 and 100 GB each on current generation consoles.

None of these details have been confirmed by Sony or Microsoft. However, based on information surrounding consoles, these numbers are probably pretty close to what you can expect when choosing your next-gen box.
