Paul Scholes says that Paul Pogba’s qualities remind him of former England teammate Steven Gerrard.
The United Scholes legend has had an almost unique opportunity to see the two midfielders up close, as Pogba was coming into the youth ranks of United when he was a senior player at Old Trafford and Liverpool legend Gerrard represented his country alongside to the.
Both Pogba and Gerrard have been acclaimed for their game-winning qualities in the past, however, both also came under fire when their midfield displays did not go as well as expected.
And Scholes can see the similarities between the couple.
“I played around with Paul a little bit and everyone knows how talented he is,” Scholes told the UTD Podcast, where he appeared alongside current United star Marcus Rashford.
“It has been brilliant for Juventus, brilliant for France in the World Cup and very good sometimes here [at United ] too.
“He can do everything as a midfielder and you will probably compare him to Steven Gerrard with the pace, the power and the skill. He can do absolutely everything.”
Pogba was out for most of this season with an ankle injury, and although he had been strongly linked with a departure from Old Trafford, he could now be forced to stay as the coronavirus pandemic wreaks havoc on the transfer market.
And although Scholes has decided to compare Pogba with Gerrard, one man who was not in the mood for comparisons was former Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas.
When asked who he preferred between Scholes and Gerrard on Twitter, he wrote: “I love Scholes and I think he is more my type of player, but I was a great admirer of Gerrard growing up. I think it is a draw.”
