Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba on Monday denied media reports that he had left the France team over comments made by the country’s president, Emmanuel Macron, which were perceived as anti-Islam.
The French leader this month declared war on “Islamist separatism”, which he believes is taking over some Muslim communities in France.
The Sun newspaper alleged that Pogba, a practicing Muslim, reacted to Macron’s comments by resigning from the national team.
“Unacceptable,” the 27-year-old wrote in a Twitter post here along with a “fake news” tag in a screenshot of The Sun headline.

“So The Sun did it again,” he added here. “Absolutely 100% unfounded news about me is circulating, indicating things that I have never said or thought.
“I am shocked, angry, shocked and frustrated, some sources in the ‘media’ use me to make false headlines on the sensitive subject of French current events and add the French team to the pot.
“I am against each and every one of the forms of terror and violence. Unfortunately, some people from the press do not act responsibly when writing the news, they abuse their freedom of the press, they do not check if what they write / reproduce is true, they create a chain of gossip regardless (if) it affects people’s lives and mine “.
Pogba added that he was taking legal action against the publishers.
The report came days after Macron paid tribute to a French history teacher who was beheaded by a radical Islamist for using cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in a class on freedom of expression for 13-year-olds.
