the United Kingdom it’s gearing up to go into another lockdown, and since its residents can’t travel anywhere, they’re getting the best alternative: a Google Maps “virtual movie search.” Over 40 beloved British movies have been hidden on the UK Google map and are available to watch for free to any movie buff who finds them. This includes institutional British classics such as Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Lycanthrope as well as other acclaimed films, including Skyfall Y Shaun of the dead.
Google has launched a “virtual movie search” in collaboration with the British Film Institute, ahead of its Google Pixel campaign introducing Mobile Cinema later this month. The Virtual Movie Search consists of 40 beloved British classics that have been strewn across UK Google Maps, with clues as to the locations of the movies that will be released ahead of the search later this month. Titles like Skyfall, Shaun of the Dead, Phantom ThreadY Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Lycanthrope will appear in this Google Maps movie search.
“As we enter another confinement, we know that people are looking for familiarity; and they find comfort in being able to reconnect with stories and characters they know and love, ”said Soniya Jobanputra, product manager for Google Pixel (via NME). “’Google Pixel Introduces Mobile Cinema’ will allow the nation to rediscover these movies from our past and be instantly transported, whether they’re on the couch, in the park, or moving between rooms. Pixel 5G will allow you to download and watch these movies instantly. “
Google and the BFI specifically chose films that will spark nostalgia among movie fans, according to Dr. Wing Yee Cheung, senior professor of psychology and nostalgia researcher at the University of Winchester. “These movies are embedded with sensory memories of when we first saw them and who we saw them with, which are the key triggers for nostalgia,” Cheung said.
It’s an easy virtual movie search – participants will receive the clues as they are released throughout the month and will be able to search a map of the UK to find key locations after following the clues. The movies will be available to watch from anywhere. Participants must ensure that their mobile devices connect to a 5G network in order to join.
It’s a nice little event hosted by Google and BFI, and perhaps a taste of what we’ll see on this side of the pond if the US is forced to shut down during the winter months, especially due to the coronavirus (COVID-19 ) cases exceed 10 million in the States.
