The Oromo regional state claimed Wednesday that it took action against 782 Oromo Liberation Front forces. The head of the region’s government communication office, Getachew Balcha, further stated that the regional government is “working to guarantee peace and security in the region,” according to state media: Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC).
Furthermore, the region’s government said it took action against Kebele and district-level government officials who reportedly collaborated with Oromo Liberation Front forces to unleash an attack on innocent citizens on ethnic grounds. However, it is not clear what kind of action was taken against the OLF forces and government officials who participated in the Wollega massacre.
The statement by the government of the Oromo region came days after a massacre in Wollege against the Amharas ethic. He admitted that there was a security problem in the region, but described it as a “crash”.
Authorities in the region believe that the incident in Horo Guduru and other areas of the Wollega region was the work of what they called “mercenaries of the TPLF Board”.
The FBC report indicates that the authorities of the region believe that the actions taken respond to criticism that the government of the region is incapable of guaranteeing peace in the region.
As seen in the past two years, it has been customary for the Oromo region authorities to offer a statement to affirm their commitment to peace and security in the region.
Earlier this week, an unspecified number of ethnic Amharas were reportedly slaughtered in the Wollega area of the region and in the Benishangul Gumuz region.
Federal government officials have yet to comment on the development in both regions.
