A group of opposition parties, including the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) and the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF), proposed extending the authority of the government’s executive body for one year, in light of the crisis constitutional for the cancellation of the elections because of the COVID pandemic.
In a joint statement, the seven opposition parties have expressed their consent for the executive body to continue to exercise its administrative function for one year. However, the government cannot enact a new law or repeal existing ones, OLF chief of public relations Kejela Merdasa told DW Amharic. Although the constitution does not have a provision for such an eventuality as it did in the case of a pandemic, it would certainly be better to violate it through the consent of the parties than an individual party, Kejela said. The constitutional interpretation, proposed by the government, is not the legitimate exit from the impasse, he said.
The situation requires the application of the doctrine of necessity, based on the experience of other countries, and the parties are calling for the establishment of a monitoring council that involves all members of the opposition who oversee key sectors such as foreign affairs, he bureau de intelligence, federal army and national security, according to the head of public relations.
