OnePlus is rumored to be working on a smartwatch for years, but the project never came to fruition. The evidence is stronger than ever that a OnePlus watch will hit the market soon, but surprisingly it will not use Google’s Wear OS platform.
Max J, a fairly reliable OnePlus informer, claim (is that the OnePlus Watch won’t use Wear OS, a bit surprising given the company’s close ties to Google and the Android platform.
Generally speaking, Wear OS is the de facto platform for smartwatch makers who don’t have the resources to build their own wearable platform from scratch. Brands like Fossil and Mobvoi are most notable for using Wear OS, but even Oppo uses it in regions outside of China.
So what is the plan for the OnePlus Watch? At this point, we are not completely sure. Obviously, the product will still pair with the company’s Android smartphones, but without Wear OS we have no indication of what kind of OS OnePlus will use on its first smartwatch. Oppo and Xiaomi have used forks of Android and Huawei also uses a barebones operating system for their popular wearable devices. Max clarified even more 9to5Google that Wear OS won’t be on this watch at all, not even a modded / skinned version.
Currently, the OnePlus Watch is expected to launch sometime next year, delayed from its previously expected launch last month.
