OnePlus 9 5G prototype on eBay just sold for thousands of dollars

It is not unusual to see online listings of what are said to be unreleased product prototypes, both past and future. eBay is definitely a prime location for these types of transactions, where potential buyers can try to outperform others for what they believe could be an important part of human history. That said, it still puzzles the mind that someone would pay $ 6,000 for a OnePlus 9 5G prototype, which may not be exactly that historic anyway.

The OnePlus 9 5G won’t be the first Snapdragon 888 phone when it launches. That title was already claimed by the Xiaomi Mi 11 and the Samsung Galaxy S21 will likely ship first anyway. As far as the other specs go, the 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and Android 11 will be pretty standard for high-end Android phones or even a bit older.

The design of the camera will definitely be a bit unique. It borrows from the current trend for large rectangular bumps, but also adds a bump of its own around the two main lenses. The display will also be flat, something confirmed by this prototype, while the OnePlus 9 Pro 5G will likely continue the tradition of a curved-edge display as well.

Given those factors, it almost seems like even the original $ 3,000 starting price for the prototype is asking too much. On the other hand, such prototypes, regardless of their usefulness or actual value, are collectibles and apparently someone found them worth $ 6,000 in the end.

Interestingly, the eBay listing was briefly removed before it was finally sold to remove the identifying marks. Unfortunately, it may already be too late, and the OnePlus legal team may already be tracing the source of this rather expensive leak.
