OnePlus 8 Pro vs. Motorola Edge Plus: Which One Should You Buy?

For some people, deciding whether to buy OnePlus 8 Pro or Motorola Edge + is quite simple. If you trust AT&T or T-Mobile as your carrier of choice, the 8 Pro is the way to go since Edge + is only available from Verizon. However, if you are a Verizon customer, things are a bit more complicated. The OnePlus 8 Pro has a technically more impressive display, legitimate water resistance, faster wireless charging, and could potentially save $ 100 if you go for the reference model. The Edge + has a few drawbacks due to its high price, but between the beautiful cascading display, the bigger battery, and the presence of a 3.5mm headphone jack, some people will be better off on Motorola’s route.

Since the original OnePlus One came out in 2014, OnePlus has become an icon for launching high-spec Android phones at considerably lower prices compared to traditional flagships. With the 8 Pro, OnePlus abandons that idea and becomes the complete flagship. The end result is really impressive.

Starting with your screen, you’ll enjoy a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen with a crisp 3168×1440 resolution. Pair it with a ridiculously smooth 120Hz refresh rate, and this is easily one of the best smartphone displays on the market in 2020.

The OnePlus 8 Pro is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor, your choice of 8 or 12 GB of RAM and a generous 4,510 mAh battery. Performance is as fast and smooth as you could ask for, and this is also helped by OxygenOS, the custom Android interface that OnePlus makes for its phones. It is clean, has no unnecessary bloatware, and OnePlus adds really cool customization tools and other features that only raise Android stock. OnePlus is also one of the best companies in the business when it comes to software updates.

Looking at the back of the OnePlus 8 Pro, you will find an impressive camera setup. The telephoto sensor isn’t the most impressive we’ve ever seen, but the 48MP main camera is capable of taking great pictures, whether in light or dark. The 48MP ultra-wide camera is good too, offering vibrant colors and lots of detail.

What else stands out about the OnePlus 8 Pro? There is an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, 30W wiring and wireless charging, and works on AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint. Not to mention that the colors Glacial Green and Ultramarine Blue are downright beautiful 😍.

Why you shouldn’t sleep on the Motorola Edge +?

The OnePlus 8 Pro is a tough phone to beat, but luckily for Motorola, the Edge + is a worthy competitor.

On a technical level, the Edge + screen is not that impressive. It has a lower resolution and refresh rate compared to the 8 Pro, but in real-world use, it still looks great. The Edge + is also named after its cascading display, which flows smoothly around the edges of the phone. Not only is it a sight to behold, Motorola also added some unique software tweaks to take advantage of drastic curves. Rounding out this is the unconventional 19.5: 9 aspect ratio, which makes using the Motorola Edge + in one hand much easier than the OnePlus 8 Pro.

Along with the display, Motorola also did a great job with the other Edge + specs. You get a Snapdragon 865 processor, 12GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and the battery weighs 5,000mAh, a much higher amount than the 8 Pro. The cameras are pretty good, too, with the main 108MP camera using the grouping of Pixels for great 27MP shots.

The Edge + software completes this experience, which is almost as good as OnePlus’ OxygenOS. Motorola is using Edge + to unveil its new My UX interface, which is just a refinement of what the company has been doing for years: Keep Android nice and clean with a few useful additions here and there. Moto Actions and Moto Display are still as good and good as ever, and now you can customize a variety of user interface elements (like accent color, app icon shapes, system font, etc.). ).

Motorola promises at least two major Android updates for Edge +, which is much better than the original promise of just one. That said, OnePlus has a better track record when it comes to getting updates quickly.

It all comes down to your choice of operator

OnePlus 8 Pro and Motorola Edge + are top-notch Android phones, but as pointed out at the top of this comparison, there’s one big factor that comes into play for all of this: your phone operator.

Motorola is only selling Edge + through Verizon, which means that if you don’t use it for your service, you’re out of luck. Worse yet, you can’t go out and just buy an unlocked model of the phone. Comparatively, the OnePlus 8 Pro is sold unlocked and can be used at AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon.

If you are a Verizon customer and have a choice between the two, it is worth considering both. The OnePlus 8 Pro has a technically better display, an IP68 rating, and a lower price for its base model. That said, Edge + gives you a headphone jack and a bigger battery. If you find one that calls you more than the other, do so.
