Nvidia’s new RTX 30XX cards will annoy everyone who just bought a 2080 Ti

Nvidia today revealed its latest lineup of graphics cards, called the RTX 30 series. With three new cards on the way, two of them relatively inexpensive, Nvidia promises that they will be the next step for PC gaming and, from what we’ve seen, it certainly looks like which can back up that claim.

GPU specs were leaked, generally, ahead of time, but seeing them in person (figuratively) was still a treat. The star of the show was the RTX 3080, powered by its new Ampere architecture. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang revealed the card, saying it would be twice as fast as its predecessor, the RTX 2080, and almost as much faster than the 2080 Ti, with 10GB of memory. And their price is, miraculously, in the triple-figure range, $ 699. The word is that Nvidia is selling these cards so cheap that they undermine its competitor AMD. I don’t know how true that is, but the part of me that loves corporate pettiness hopes it is.

Probably most interesting for GPU enthusiasts is that Nvidia also announced the RTX 3070. The aim of this card is to offer comparable, albeit slightly lower, performance to its older brother 3080, at a lower price. Nvidia boasted that the 3070 is actually faster than the best RTX card the company currently sells, the RTX 2080 Ti. And it will sell for $ 499, pretty much a bargain when you compare it to the $ 1,249 price tag on the 2080 Ti (at the time of writing). WCCFTech reports that eBay is flooded with gamers trying to sell their RTX 2080 Tis for roughly the same price as the 3080 and 3070, although I was only able to find a few when I checked, maybe they all sold so fast.

Honestly speaking as someone who owns an RTX 2080 and paid for it late last year, I have to insert a meme here that perfectly captures my reaction to the news:

Henry says it best! by pcmasterrace

Now if you want something that’s really expensive and looks like it, Nvidia has that covered too. The RTX 3090 is a beast of a card, designed to support 60fps gaming at 8k resolution. I know this because they showed a series of players playing with the card and commenting on how damn pretty it was. Interestingly, Huang, who was broadcasting in his kitchen, revealed the 3090 by pulling it out of the oven. Explicitly compared to the Titan card, it has a whopping 24GB of GDDR6X VRAM. I’m looking forward to seeing how all these cards perform in action, but I would be lying if I said this is not my new favorite. Still, you’ll need three full slots to fit the damn thing – it’s an absolute drive compared to its more 3080 and 3070 siblings.

All three cards will be released this year, the 3080 will be released on September 17, the 3090 will be released on September 24, and the 3070 sometime in October.
