As if getting an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 wasn’t hard enough, those lucky enough to own one run into trouble with third-party models.
It all started with someone at Linus Tech Tips pointing out a game crashing with the Zotac GeForce RTX 3080 Trinity last week. Since then, that issue has expanded to include MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Ventus 3X OC owners reporting glitches on the Overclockers UK forum. Many of these crashes cause people to quit games and go back to the desktop, and there is no clear explanation as to why this is happening so far.
ComputerBase flagged the problem reports, but has yet to recreate the same problems with its GeForce RTX 3080 Founders Edition, a graphics card that comes straight from Nvidia. However, it seems that when the graphics card is boosted beyond a 2.0GHz clock speed, it causes a crash on the desktop.
This issue seems to be particularly noticeable with third-party versions of the RTX 3080, as they tend to come factory-overclocked.
“I’d like to point out a potential issue for all (un) happy owners of an MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Ventus 3X OC,” said forum user ComputerBase R-47. “The card increases significantly with the default settings in games -> for example, up to 2040 MHz after a few seconds in the [Assassin’s Creed: Origins] benchmark, which then of course causes a game crash. ”
What to do
The solution to this seems to be to offset the GPU clock speed by up to 100MHz, subverting the graphics card with the MSI Afterburner 4.6.3 BETA 2 utility software and disabling hardware accelerated GPU scheduling in Windows 10. But these don’t. They’re ideal. solutions to a problem on a new and very powerful $ 699 graphics card.
While there is currently no official fix, we’re pretty confident that Nvidia will work on a driver update to address the issue, as long as it’s not a fundamental hardware flaw. However, this is not great news for folks who manage to get their hands on the RTX 3080. And with AMD Big Navi on the horizon, Nvidia would do well to act quickly to resolve these issues with the RTX 3080.
