Nokia’s Emmy Awards may seem far-fetched to many, but the Finnish telecommunications giant just won fourth. The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awarded the Emmy Award in the Technology and Engineering section to Nokia’s Media Technologies Research department.
This department played an important role in the development of the standardization of the ISO base media file format, which is also part of the MPEG-4 standard or something important for video transmission.
Interestingly, the evolution of this format also served as the basis for the creation of the HEIF (High-Efficiency Image File Format) format that Nokia also developed. This format improved the way we store and share images and image sequences, and you can enable it in the camera application on some Nokia devices.
People often take Emmy Awards as an award for movie stars, but it’s good to see that the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences also recognizes achievements in the technology behind the movie industry. Last time, Nokia won an Emmy for its pioneering work in developing CCD chips, which are an essential part of digital cameras.
