Starting this week on Fortnite, you can have the Predator do a victory dance from Pele while wielding the pickaxe of TheGrefg’s command. On Thursday, a Faze Clan streamer played Fortnite with a Manchester City star while wearing Manchester City skin. The success of Battle Royale has long been known as a cross-promotion monster, but developer Epic Games has recently taken things to a whole new level.
Just this season, which began on December 2, Epic added:
Crossovers like these are nothing new to Fortnite. The final season of the game was a multi-month Marvel mashup, there have been multiple Star WarsThemed cosmetics, other real world streamers added to the game include Tyler “Ninja” Blevins and Kathleen “Loserfruit” Belsten, and there have even been concerts (and the cosmetics that go with the game) with great artists like Travis Scott and Marshmello.
For me, crossovers are part of the continuing appeal of Fortnite – Where else can I play as Kratos and face Iron Man? – and each new addition helps Epic build the ultimate virtual world. But crossovers also provide Epic with opportunities to generate more cash, which could help make up for the game’s absence on iOS. The Battle Royale game is free, so each brand new appearance is an opportunity for Epic to make people pay for items from the in-game store or sell one of their Season Battle Passes.
Don’t expect the crossovers to stop anytime soon. The predator just joined Fortnite, but Epic is already mocking arrival by Sarah Connor from The terminator franchise. That probably means there will be a Terminator cyborg skin too, and if there is, that means you’ll be able to pit Terminator against Predator in a fight through the ages. I just hope Mando doesn’t intervene.
