Nintendo will increase production of its Switch console in the near future after high demand during the COVID-19 pandemic caused a shortage across the country.
What’s going on:
Nintendo has asked its partners to create an additional 30 million consoles by 2020, which is much higher than the original goals of 19 million and 22 million, according to Bloomberg.
- Production jumped to about 25 million earlier this year. But the console is still difficult to find.
In fact, as Engadget reports, the Switch and Switch Lite have been selling at high prices on Amazon and eBay due to unavailability in the stories.
- “A lot of that has been driven by the popularity of Animal Crossing and other recent games, as people are stuck at home and starving for entertainment,” reports Eurogamer.
A new model on the way?
As I wrote for Deseret.com, Nintendo is likely to release an upgraded Switch model next year to compete with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
- The system is likely to have 4K graphics and computing power. It would also come with an improved line of games to compete with the tougher consoles.
A new version of the Nintendo Switch would be the first update to the model since March 2017, The Verge reports.
