Nicky Butt says it is a “myth” that recent Manchester United managers focused only on short-term gains and large sums of money.
The former United Butt midfielder is the head of first-team development at the club these days, and has overseen the smooth transitions to the senior setup enjoyed by Scott McTominay and Mason Greenwood.
Common consensus says that current boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is more willing to give young people a chance than any of the predecessors Louis van Gaal and José Mourinho, who made big money moves during their time at Old Trafford.
Van Gaal brought in Argentine winger Angel Di Maria for £ 59.7 million in the summer of 2014, while Radamel Falcao was also added to a lucrative loan deal.
After being fired in the summer of 2016, Mourinho oversaw a world record move for Paul Pogba, while veteran Zlatan Ibrahimovic also joined a short-term contract that turned the money around.
United also made Alexis Sánchez the highest-paid player in the Premier League when he was brought in from Arsenal in January 2018.
However, Butt says managers were still interested in youth.
“I think it is hard for Van Gaal and Mourinho, and David Moyes to a certain extent, because they did not enter Man Utd and they left, they moved everything aside, they disrespected Man Utd and we will do it that way,” said the former midfielder to MUTV.
“They did not. They never did, it is a myth that they did.”
“Mourinho was brilliant with me. He spoke to me every day at breakfast and asked me about the children. He made some meetings with the children when they were going to Portugal [in the UEFA Youth League] and tell them what to expect etc. “
