Addis Ababa, October 07, 2020 – Yesterday morning, October 6, 2020, the Oromia Supreme Court allowed Lidetu Ayalew to be released on bail, which has already been granted by the East Shewa Court in Adama. Consequently, the court rejected the prosecutor’s appeal against bail and ordered her release on bail. However, Lidetu still remains in custody.
The court wrote a letter to the Bishoftu City Police Department requesting confirmation of the decision, but Adane Tadesse, chairman of the Ethiopian Democratic Party (EDP), told Addis Standard that the police department that received the letter had not yet I had freed him.
According to Adane, Lidetu Ayalew in his court appearance said: “Honorable court, I really thank you for honoring my right to bail. However, this decision is unlikely to be carried out as I am in the custody of a law enforcement agency that does not comply with a court order. Therefore, I respectfully request that the court order my release in front of the court without being returned to the police station so that the court’s decision is respected ”.
Adane said that just after the court session ended around 10:00 a.m., he along with Lidetu’s attorneys brought the written order to the East Shewa Court and the Bishoftu Police yesterday, October 6. 2020. The court order letter was sent to the Bishoftu Police Registration Office at 2:25 pm in the afternoon. It seems that Lidetu will be a victim of bureaucracy.
“Despite efforts to secure the direct and clear order for Lidetu’s judicial release, the Bishoftu police station has yet to release Lidetu in accordance with the court order.” Adane said.
Lidetu Ayalew, who was repeatedly denied bail in previous appeals, and later on September 22, 2020, was granted a 100,000 birr bail by the East Shewa Court that allowed her to pursue her case outside of detention. pending further investigation.
Adane also told Addis Standard that they had notified the situation to Dr. Daniel Bekele, the Chief Commissioner of the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission in the late afternoon.
It was recalled that prosecutors in the East Shewa area in September 17, 2020 filed criminal charges against veteran opposition politician Lidetu Ayalew, founder of the opposition Ethiopian Democratic Party (EDP) for violating Ethiopia’s recently enacted Firearms Administration and Control Proclamation 1177/2020, art. 3/22.
