Addis Ababa, November 24, 2020: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Ethiopia are considering possibilities for cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), according to a statement sent to Addis Standard from the UAE embassy in Addis Ababa.
This occurred at a meeting between Mr. Talal Al-Azeezi, Head of the Political, Economic and Media Affairs Section of the UAE Embassy in Ethiopia, and Eng. Worku Gachena, Director General of the Intelligence Center Ethiopian Artificial (AIC).
Mr. Talal congratulated the Director General on the inauguration of the AIC, noting that it can play a leading role in the research and development of AI in Ethiopia and for the technological advancement of various fields, including; agriculture, health, finance and transportation, which are very important to the Ethiopian economy.
Talal said that the UAE is among the first countries in the world to prioritize AI in their development policies, as it adopted his (Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031). It is also the first country in the region to open a university for AI, the Mohamed Bin Zayed University for Artificial Intelligence, which offers academic AI programs (master’s and doctorate) for local and international students. The UAE also appointed the world’s premier State Minister for Artificial Intelligence.
Highlighting the close ties and existing cooperation in many fields between the UAE and Ethiopia, Mr. Talal said that there are possibilities for cooperation between the two countries in the field of artificial intelligence.
Ing. Worku Gachena, Director General of the AIC, welcomed the visit of the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates and reported on the history of the establishment of the Center, the main activities carried out, future plans and objectives and its challenges.
The Director General thanked the United Arab Emirates for the support and assistance provided in establishing the Center, in particular through (G42), a leading AI and cloud computing company based in Abu Dhabi.
At the end of the meeting, both sides agreed to continue discussing future cooperation in AI between the two friendly countries. They toured the Center and its main departments. AS
