Addis Ababa March 19, 2021 – TV program producer and activist Meseret Dhaba was released from prison today after 38 days in detention. Meseret was arrested for the first time on January 27, 2021, among dozens of people from the facilities of the Lideta branch of the federal high court for wearing yellow during key hearings in the case of Jawar Mohammed and others in solidarity with the defendants. She was later released.
Again, Meseret was arrested at her residence in the Haya Hulet area of Addis Ababa on February 10, 2021. “I was sleeping with my children when they came and took me away.” Meseret said, remembering his arrest. According to her family, the plainclothes security forces detained her and showed her identity documents belonging to the Addis Ababa police. They did not have an arrest warrant, but they asked him if he was still working for OMN, a television channel founded by Jawar Mohammed and others. Meseret recalled being told that the “Oromia police needed her” the day she was detained at the Karamara police station in the sub-city of Bole, in the capital Addis Ababa. Hours later, she was taken to Gelan Mazegaja Police Station in Gelan, a town in the Oromia special zone surrounding Finfinnee and detained in unfavorable conditions.
Meseret explained to Addis Standard that during the period of her detention, she was unable to get any response from the Addis Ababa police or the Oromia police as to why she was arrested. Two weeks after his arrest, his defense team filed a habeas corpus with the Gelan District Court. The court then asked both the Oromia police and the Attorney General to present the reasons for Meseret’s arrest. The Oromia police did not appear in court nor did they bring Meseret to court. Therefore, the court finally decided to release her on March 17, 2021.
She was released late today after spending 38 days in detention without charge. Elias, Meseret’s husband, told Addis Standard: “His release took two days because that’s how long it took to complete the paperwork.” WHAT
