Addis Ababa, September 4, 2020 – The Executive (Cabinet) of the National Regional State of Tigray warned the Chamber of the Federation (HoF) to refrain from committing a “historical error” in the emergency meeting that the Chamber called for tomorrow.
On August 31, the HoF called its members through its Facebook page to meet on September 5 for an emergency meeting. The agenda for the emergency meeting, called during the House’s summer recess, has not been disclosed, but many speculate that the upcoming Tigray regional elections, scheduled for September 9, will be at the top of the agenda.
If confirmed, it comes after HoF’s newly installed speaker Adem Farah delivered a warning statement to Tigray abstain from their planned regional elections.
“If the decision to suspend or put any other obstacle to the election of Tigray is approved, it is a declaration of war,” the Executive’s statement said yesterday.
The statement reaffirmed that on 6th The round-robin regional election will be held in accordance with the Constitution of the FDRE and the Constitution of the National Regional State of Tigray; and that it cannot be suspended a second time with any type of intervention.
“The Cabinet wants to make it clear to all friends and foes that the House of the Federation and the Prime Minister will be responsible for the reaction and damage that follows the decision of the House of the Federation.”
The communiqué also urged the people of Tigray to be prepared to ensure their imminent victory by blocking any intervention by the federal government or any other body to obstruct their election that implies their right to self-determination.
Furthermore, he urged the international community to take responsibility for influencing and supporting the success of this election and to condemn any interference that could disrupt it.
The statement concluded with his firm massages, urging anyone who intends to “disturb or destabilize the election, as well as any force that opposes the existence and well-being of our people, to refrain from their evil act.”
Yesterday’s Cabinet statement was followed today by an emergency meeting of the Tigray Parliament during which members passed a unanimous vote calling on the Tigray representatives of the HoF to boycott tomorrow’s emergency meeting by the HoF.
This comes after the Tigray National Regional Council issued a letter addressed to the HoF requesting details of the agenda for tomorrow’s meeting.
Meanwhile, Asmelash Woldesilasie, a powerful member of the TPFL executive committee, told Tigray Media House today that the emergency meeting of the HoF next Saturday was to approve a decision on the Tigray election. “If I am not mistaken, the HoF has not called an emergency meeting for the last five years and the reason for calling such a meeting in its final term is clear. It is even possible to guess. But more than that, the information I got inside the HoF [indicates] the meeting is called to approve decisions on the preparation of the ongoing elections in Tigray, ”said Asmelash. “We have heard that the HoF is ready to approve a decision [declare] the 6th regional election round in Tigray as a violation of the constitution and thus allowing the federal government to act accordingly. “
He also indicated that the HoF kept agendas highly confidential and restricted within a few people. According to him, the HoF “violated the right to transparency enshrined in the constitution.” Even with regard to the framework of the members of the Federation Council, the rules of procedure explain that the members must be notified in advance of the agenda of an upcoming meeting for its preparation. The Federation’s transparency and participatory practice have been gradually erased despite the publicly stated commitment of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed when he took office, Asmelash argued.
As of this writing, the HoF has not disclosed its agenda for tomorrow’s emergency meeting. HOW
