Addis Ababa, October 02, 2020 – Adem Farah, president of the House of Federation (HoF) says that there are sufficient constitutional means to take action against those who endanger the constitution.
According to the state, FanaBC, affiliated with the ruling party, Adem Farah said the Ethiopian Parliament had followed a constitutional means to extend Ethiopia’s sixth general election, which was scheduled for August 29.
However, those who do not comply with the constitution and groups who do not seek peace are confusing the public, the speaker said. One such entity is the regional state of Tigray, according to the news portal. “In its activities so far, the regional state has endangered the constitution,” Adem Farah is quoted.
He said the election held in the regional state of Tigray was unconstitutional and contravenes the mandate of the Ethiopian National Electoral Board (NEBE). In doing so, the region is found to have violated the constitution and there are sufficient grounds to take constitutional action, he said.
Among these constitutional measures is the suspension of the legislative and executive organs of the regional state, he said. Subsequently, the establishment of a transitional regional government is ensured, which will be accountable to the federal government. The other constitutional measure is the dispatch of federal security forces to control the actions of the regional state that have endangered the constitutional order, the news portal reported.
The speaker’s statement came just days after TPLF, the ruling party of the regional state of Tigray, said the region will not comply with laws, directives and regulations, among others, that will be promulgated by the federal government after its Current term will come to an end ends on Monday, October 5, 2020.
In an interview broadcast on Tigray Mass Media Agency, Asmelash Wolde Sellassie, a member of the TPLF executive council and former head of government, said that on October 5, the constitutional term limit for the House of People’s Representatives (HoPR), the The Federation Chamber (HoF), Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the Council of Ministers (CoM) he presides will have come to an end, rendering the incumbent’s stay in power “constitutionally illegal”.
The House Federation has announced that the first ordinary sixth year joint session of the HoF and the House of People’s Representatives (HoPR) will meet on Monday.
However, Tigray has already said that it would withdraw all its HoPR and HoF representatives after October 5 on the grounds that the region will not become part of an “illegitimate government.” When asked what the way out would be, Asmelash referred to a recent statement issued by the Coalition of Ethiopian Federalist Forces. The statement issued on September 17 suggested, among others, “the formation of an independent technocratic interim government whose composition reflects the diversity of the Ethiopian people.”HOW
