Addis Ababa, May 04/2020 – Members of the House of People’s Representatives (HoPR) will meet for the third special meeting of the House tomorrow morning to approve one of the four alternatives presented by the government vis a vis Ethiopia’s deferred elections, HoPR said.

On April 29, the ruling Prosperity Party (PP) presented four options as an alternative to avoid a possible constitutional crisis. Alternatives from the ruling party that were presented at a meeting with representatives of opposition parties include: Dissolving Parliament; Declaring a state of emergency; Amend the constitution; and looking for constitutional interpretations.

This occurs in the context of a closed-door meeting by the members of the PP Central Committee on April 26 and 27, during which the four options were widely discussed. Sources close to the matter said Addis Standard under conditions of anonymity that the PP Central Committee has already opted for the fourth alternative: seeking constitutional interpretations.

On April 30, HoPR approved NEBE’s decision to postpone the elections and referred the matter to the House Standing Committee on Legal, Justice and Administration for further deliberation. Today, the House said its members will meet tomorrow “to approve one of the four Standing Committee recommendations regarding the elections,” HoPR said.

The background to the current debate on the matter was preceded by the March 30 decision of the Ethiopian National Electoral Board (NEBE) to postpone the national elections on August 29. HOW
