Microsoft’s first Windows 10 preview build under Windows’ new Fe (Iron) branch has landed on the development pipeline, introducing some useful new tools for quickly installing Linux distributions on the Windows subsystem for Linux.
The Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) enables developers to run a Linux environment directly on Windows without the need for a virtual machine or dual-boot setup.
With Preview Build 20246, users who want to install WSL can simply type wsl.exe –install at the command line. This will automatically generate a fully configured WSL instance of your chosen Linux distribution out of the box.
Build 20246 is now available to Insiders within the Windows 10 development channel.

Microsoft’s latest Insider release also marks a change to the FE_RELEASE branch of Windows 10 development and removes a handful of features Microsoft had been testing with Insiders, including the Calendar app preview experience, which the company said would return. to its “classic look”. and feel “in an upcoming update.
Windows Insiders users will see a pop-up window notifying them of changes to the preview experience, Microsoft said.

“We hope to bring these features back to Insiders in the future. As an important reminder, builds in the FE_RELEASE branch do not correspond to a specific version of Windows 10,” Microsoft said in a blog post.
He added: “Just like we did in May when we released builds of the MN_RELEASE branch, we are practicing our ability to change which branch [to] the flight is based on.
“As our engineers work in development cycles internally, we can prioritize the work that is done in a specific branch and we may have to move Insiders between branches.”
