New MediaTek Chipsets for Chromebooks Balance Power and Efficiency

During the Mediatek Executive Summit 2020, an online event that took place on Tuesday (Nov 10), MediaTek announced a pair of Chromebook chipsets that it says could balance power with better battery life performance. . The company designed and developed the 6nm MT8195 for premium Chromebooks and the 7nm MT8192 for wider use.

With the new chipsets, MediaTek can build powerful, sleek, and lightweight Chromebooks that deliver longer battery life and incredible computing experiences.

The MediaTek MT8195, built on the 6nm TSMC process, integrates an eight-core CPU, with four Arm Cortex-A78 cores for computing-intensive applications and four low-power Arm Cortex-A55 cores to simultaneously handle background tasks and maximize battery life. The five-core Arm-Mali G57 GPU delivers excellent visuals, while the 2133MHz quad-channel LPDDR4X ensures that there is enough memory bandwidth for powerful cores. The AI ​​processing unit is MediaTek APU 3.0, which provides processing of up to 4 trillion operations per second.

The chipset also drives up to three displays simultaneously and supports Dolby Vision, 7.1 surround sound audio, and a Codec AV1 hardware video accelerator. This enables users to enjoy cinema-quality experiences for streaming movies and TV shows from the most popular online services.

The MT8192 targets more affordable Chromebooks, with four Arm Cortex-A76 cores paired with four Arm Cortex-A55 cores to provide an ideal balance of power and efficiency. It also has an older APU, the APU 2.0, which provides up to 2.4 trillion operations per second. Additionally, the MT8192 supports Wide Quad High Definition (WQHD) displays with standard 60Hz refresh rates or Full HD displays with refresh rates up to 120Hz for super-fast response.

With the MT8192 and MT8195 chipsets, brands can design Chromebooks with a variety of camera configurations thanks to a high dynamic range (HDR) image signal processor and a hardware depth engine built into the chipsets. This allows manufacturers to integrate super-large 80MP 4-cell cameras, 32MP single cameras, or dual camera setups up to 16 MP + 16 MP to deliver crisp, crisp HDR Chromebooks for video conferencing.

Devices based on the MT8192 will begin shipping in the second quarter of next year. The MT8195 will power premium Chromebooks, smart displays, tablets and other smart devices, which will hit the market at a later date.
