Netflix Says ‘Cuties’ Is A “Social Commentary” Against Sexualizing Girls

Netflix has defended Maïmouna Doucouré’s film Cuties as a “social comment” against the sexualization of young children.

The film, which came under fire after a deceptive marketing campaign, is still under attack by online social media users who claim that the film sexualizes girls.

More than 300,000 people signed a petition demanding that the film be withdrawn, claiming that Cuties He sexualized “an 11-year-old boy for the visual pleasure of pedophiles,” with Doucouré since receiving death threats.

In a statement to VarietySaid a Netflix spokesperson: “Cuties is a social comment against the sexualization of young children.

“It is an award-winning film and a powerful story about the pressure girls face on social media and from society in general as they grow up, and we encourage anyone who cares about these important issues to watch the film.”

Doucouré continued explaining in Why i made cuties, a six-minute feature film accompanying the film on Netflix, which met hundreds of young girls to accurately portray her understanding of femininity.

“I put my heart in this movie because this is my story,” said the filmmaker. “Our girls see that the more sexualized a woman is on social media, the more successful she is.

“And yes, it is dangerous.”

In a four-star review, NME called Cuties “A powerful exploration of the way young women are subconsciously encouraged to act on the male gaze.”

The review continued: “This is a vivid and very alarming portrait of a young woman struggling to live up to two competing ways of deeply ingrained patriarchy.”
