The Oromo Liberation Front Party (OLF) resorted to convening the party’s general congress as a way to resolve the difference within the party that led to a faction. Former party spokesperson Kejela Merdassa does not even recognize the group led by Dawud Ibsa as a faction. It’s a clique, he said in an interview with Ahadu TV last week.

The group led by Ararso Bikila has been vying for recognition from the Ethiopian National Electoral Board (NEBE) after concluding a party congress in hopes of gaining recognition from the Board. He also appealed to the Board to be allowed to participate in the next elections saying that he did not meet the deadline for candidate registration due to the work of the party congress.

It turns out that NEBE rejected the congress held by Ararso Bikila’s group. In a statement issued Sunday, NEBE said it had been receiving appeal and suspension letters from both sides of the faction within OLF following the split.

NEBE said the party congress was called by the executive committee meeting while two-thirds of the executive committee attended the meeting. The circumstances under which the congress was convened violated section 23/4 of the party’s regulations. The body formed to carry out the party congress violated the regulations and was unable to execute the party congress. It was indicated that NEBE’s decision was made based on the documents presented to the Board.

Only three members of the executive committee established the organizing committee for the party’s general congress, it was said.

In addition, NEBE cited section 16.2 of the OLF party bylaws to point out that attendance at the party’s congress violated party law.

A member who is to be elected as a representative to the General Assembly must serve at least two years, but no evidence is provided to verify that those who attended meet the criteria established in section 17.1 of the party bylaws, Electoral Board. said more.

NEBE decided that the party congress is not acceptable for the reasons mentioned above.

The OLF’s request to participate in the elections is unacceptable not because the deadline has been exceeded, but because the leadership chosen after the party Congress is not accepted. The party has not yet reacted to NEBE’s decision.

It should be remembered that the Oromo Liberation Front has been experiencing internal unrest for what a faction of it (under Ararso Bikila) said that it is a difference on the strategy to achieve the party’s objectives.

On the other hand, the faction led by former party chair Dawud Ibsa is believed to have ties to the militant wing of the Oromo Liberation Front, although Dawud stated that his party no longer has ties to him.

The Ethiopian government has been linking the Oromo Liberation Front to massacres, assassinations and assassinations in the country, including the assassination of Hachalu Hudnessa.

The militant wing leaks on social media images of ISIS-style executions and images of people, including an elderly man, who will be executed
