NBA 2K21 launched on September 4 to a tepid reaction. While fans have appreciated the changes to multiplayer modes like MyTeam and the Neighborhood, single player modes are neglected. MyLeague and MyGM remain largely unchanged. The game feels like a cosmetic upgrade to NBA 2K20. Nothing is different. Well, not nothing.
While the game is similar, there is a major change. Fans have long complained about the lack of a skills gap in the game. The simulation style made the game feel like a combination of shooting odds. To fix this, 2K changed the shot meter. The new shot meter isn’t that easy to use, as you not only have to time your shot, but also give it direction. The change was criticized during the demo, but it doesn’t appear to have been fixed.
Now current generation cover star Damian Lillard has tweeted expressing his dissatisfaction with the new shot meter.

Will NBA 2K21 have a patched shot meter?
The shot meter has caused a storm in the 2K community. While many are extremely upset at how difficult shooting has become, others say it’s a welcome change. Players who have grown weary of the constantly random odds of shots falling will enjoy a little extra control over their shot with the new shooting system. However, it makes the game nearly impossible for casual gamers who won’t bother learning to shoot in casual games here and there.
Even Ronnie2K He addressed the concerns with the shot meter, and seemed to indicate that the meter will stay the same. He apparently stood firm on the decision and confirmed that it was an addition to widening the skills gap at the most competitive level.
There was no urgent solution. Nothing to see here. The skills gap remains. Rejoice.

Even though the shooting has been criticized, people have bought the game in droves. The 2K servers were heavy on day one, but will normalize during the week. Offline players can continue to play NBA 2K20, as there is nothing new that the game offers them. However, the new Neighborhood and MyTeam systems incentivize online players to jump on the new game, although the actual updates come with the next generation.
