The 1-0 loss to the Toffees on Sunday saw the manager lose the first game of the season for the first time in his career.

José Mourinho suffered an unwanted run first when his team fell 1-0 to Everton in their first game of the Premier League campaign.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin edged Hugo Lloris in the 10th minute of the second half to consign the Spurs to defeat.

It is the first time in Mourinho’s 20-year coaching career that the Portuguese started the league season with a defeat.

The 57-year-old had a record 11 wins and seven draws in his teams’ first league games of the season before the Toffees overtook the Spurs at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

In the Premier League, it is only the second time a Mourinho team has lost points in their opening match, and Swansea is the only other team to come out with a point when they drew 2-2 in 2015-16.

While defeats on opening day may be rare for the former Real Madrid, Inter and Manchester United manager, the north London side have had more than their fair share. Although it was the first time in five years that Spurs lost on Matchday 1, only West Ham have started more Premier League campaigns with a loss, having been outscored 14 times.

Mourinho was enraged at the way his team conceded against the Toffees, complaining that the ball should have been moved back a few meters before Lucas Digne sent the free kick into the box for Calvert-Lewin.

“The goal was a bit strange. It is not an excuse for the result or the defeat or the performance. With so many referees on the field and on the line, to launch a shot from a minimum distance of five meters [away from where the foul was] it’s unbelievable, “said Mourinho. Sky Sports.

“Before the goal I was telling the referees, five meters makes a big difference in the position of our baseline and the angle of the cross.”

When asked if his players should have talked to the referee before the free kick was taken, Mourinho said: “We have meetings even now at Zoom asking the players not to complain to the referees. The referee is there, the VAR guys are in touch with him, Graham Scott, the fourth official, is there. “

Spurs, who finished sixth and 40 points behind champion Liverpool in the Premier League last season, have a chance to get back on track on Thursday when they face Lokomotiv Plovdiv in the Europa League qualifiers. They will then return to housework with an away game against Southampton on September 20.
