Rabat – Morocco’s Ministry of Health launched a national influenza (flu) prevention campaign on Monday, targeting people at risk of serious complications.
The campaign, under the slogan “some are more vulnerable to influenza”, seeks to protect pregnant women, people with chronic diseases such as chronic kidney disease, diabetes, heart disease and chronic lung diseases.
The ministry also urged people 65 and older and children under the age of five to get the vaccine.
The declaration also recommends the vaccine for health professionals, as it “allows the prevention of the transmission of the disease to patients admitted to health centers.”
Flu vaccines also help healthcare professionals protect themselves and their families.
“The flu vaccine available this year is a quadrivalent (quadrivalent) vaccine. Its composition is adjusted annually, following the recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO), ”said the ministry.
The Ministry of Health emphasized the importance of achieving wide influenza vaccination coverage among people at risk and recalled the need to use hygienic and social distancing measures to avoid contracting COVID-19 and influenza.
The Health Ministry said in July that it will supply hospitals across the country with flu and pneumococcal vaccines next fall, as Morocco hopes for a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine.
Health Minister Khalid Ait Taleb highlighted “the severity of seasonal flu for vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly, pregnant women, infants and people with serious illnesses.”
The minister warned that between 250,000 and 650,000 people die each year from seasonal flu worldwide.
Three to five million people worldwide get the flu each year.
In August, three Moroccan medical associations sent a letter to the Ministry of Education to emphasize the importance of flu vaccines for students choosing in-person education this year.
In the midst of COVID-19, supplying hospitals with sufficient vaccine stocks is one of the priorities of the Ministry of Health.
The country continues to report thousands of new COVID-19 cases every day.
The number of cases reached 222,544, including 3,762 deaths and 184,313 recoveries, on November 1.
The number of active cases stands at 34,469.
