The number of people registered for the elections is the highest in history, said Muluwork Kidanenariam, an electoral commissioner for Tigray.

The federal government in March of this year postponed the parliamentary and regional elections scheduled for August due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.
A new date has not yet been set, but according to the Chamber of the Federation, the VI national elections will be held after the COVID-19 pandemic ceases to be a health threat.
The Tigray People’s Liberation Front, the region’s ruling party, split from the national coalition Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) last year when its other three parties merged to form the new Prosperity Party.
The TPLF said it would proceed with the elections in Tigray despite the postponement of the nationwide vote.
The commissioner said that it was mandatory for people who come to registration centers to wear masks and wash their hands.
Tigray reported more than 2,500 confirmed cases of coronavirus, making it the fourth most affected region in the country.
The regional government has made 2,000 polling stations available and more than 60 representatives of different social groups, including civic associations, members of the Tigrayan national associations in North America and religious institutions, will observe the election.
It is not yet clear whether international organizations will observe the elections.
Five political parties, including the TPLF, will compete in the controversial Tigray election. Opposition parties claimed that the TPLF has forgotten about the town of Tigray during its 27 years in power.
Some of the competing parties, namely Baitona, Salsawi Weyane and Wnat announced plans for the removal, while TPLF and Asimba pointed out the opposite.
Of the 11 individual candidates, six of them withdrew from the election last week for undisclosed reasons.
Meanwhile, the TPLF dismissed reports from neighboring Amhara region that 60 members of the Tigray task force defected to the Amhara region, characterizing the report as “a bull gives birth to a calf.”
The Director General for Communication Affairs of the Amhara regional government told the BBC Amharic that 60 armed members of the Tigray task force defected to the Amhara regional state along with their weapons.
