Horizon: Zero Dawn PC Launch marks the first exclusivity break for Sony’s own games. In its recent 2020 Corporate Report, Sony said that PC ports will continue, but did not describe the details.
“SIE aims to achieve strong revenue growth by accelerating the virtuous cycle that has been established for the PlayStation platform. This involves increasing active users and playing time, improving network services, and hardening the IP of content so that Consumers choose PlayStation as their platform of choice. Results include active user growth, higher retention, and a shorter cash conversion cycle, from which expanded cash flow can be expected. We will explore expanding our proprietary titles to the PC platform, to promote further growth in our profitability. “
Just don’t expect Sony to follow Microsoft’s business plan and start releasing its own games simultaneously on PCs and consoles. PC versions will arrive later. Own games are a means not only to sell PlayStation consoles, which is a booming business, but also to drive huge digital revenue on the PlayStation Network.
Sony uses tent exclusives (or exclusives that once were) as the main attraction of the PlayStation platform. Case in point: Sony just had the best Q1 in video game history, with over $ 1 billion in PlayStation earnings and $ 3.6 billion in digital game sales.
The PC will not be the main attraction, it will be a secondary attraction. Microsoft has embraced the PC out of necessity. Sony, however, no need PC, but sees it as another avenue to sell games. However, it will never outshine PlayStation consoles.
Actual PC sales of its original games aren’t that high. According to SteamSpyThe PC version of Horizon: Zero Dawn has sold up to 500,000 copies. This pales in comparison to the 2.6 million copies it sold on PS4 in two weeks.
Right now, Sony is excited about their PlayStation 5, so any new games coming to PS5 may not make it to PC for a while (if at all). Sony awaits the PlayStation 5 to significantly increase hardware and software earnings to $ 23 billion this fiscal year. That kind of increase wouldn’t be possible if PS5 games were released on PC as well.
