Geneva / Sputnik: The Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has said that the world should prepare for future pandemics that are inevitable.
“In the last 12 months, our world has been turned upside down,” Ghebreyesus said in a video that marked the first International Epidemic Preparedness Day on Sunday.
He added that before the start of the coronavirus pandemic last spring, there were many reviews and reports saying that the world was not ready for such a crisis.
“All countries should invest in preparedness capabilities,” the WHO chief emphasized, adding that “true preparedness is not just a job for the health sector” and requires “a whole-of-government and entire-community approach. society”.
“History tells us that this will not be the last pandemic, and epidemics are a reality,” Ghebreyesus warned, saying that we must learn lessons from the current pandemic.
According to the latest WHO estimates, there are more than 78.6 million confirmed cases of coronavirus in the world, while the global death toll exceeds 1.7 million.
Meanwhile, Johns Hopkins University estimates the number of COVID-19 cases at 80.2 million, including 1.75 deaths.
