This morning’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone update adds mode-specific uninstall options on PC, and by using it I was able to reduce the game’s install footprint to 168GB.
After downloading the ~ 20GB patch, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone weighed in at a whopping 231GB on PC.
Within Battle.net there is a mode specific basic uninstall manager that allows you to get rid of campaign, multiplayer and / or special ops. Warzone, however, is mandatory and cannot be uninstalled, which is annoying if you just want to play Modern Warfare.
This is how the options work:
- Campaign: 34.53 GB removed
- Multiplayer: 42.12 GB removed
- Spec Ops: 37.83GB removed
When I was done with the Modern Warfare campaign and had no interest in Spec Ops, I got rid of both of them and stuck with multiplayer. That took off 72.37GB, leaving me with a new 168GB install footprint, and space to download the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War open beta, which weighs in at 42.20GB on PC and launches tomorrow.
While I’m happy to be able to reduce the overall footprint of Modern Warfare on my PC, 168GB is still a huge space for Warzone and multiplayer. Infinity Ward production director Paul Haile said that Warzone cannot be uninstalled from Modern Warfare because “that’s where all the shared data for weapons / operators / etc that is needed for all modes is stored. The only data is stored. Specific to Warzone being mined is the map and it’s not as much information compared to all the weapons and operators. “
“In other words: you wouldn’t save much space by uninstalling Warzone, but you still need all the data for MP.”
