Ethiopia is perplexed by the silence of the UN Security Council on the Sudanese invasion of Ethiopian territories that the Ethiopian government publicly announced.

Ethiopian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Ambassador Dina Mufti, said the UN Security Council on the situation in Ethiopia’s northern part, Tigray, is puzzling while ignoring the Sudanese invasion.

Ethiopian people living along the border areas with Sudan were displaced and their properties looted by Sudanese forces. In some places, Sudanese forces have occupied up to fifty kilometers of land within Ethiopia and are building trenches to strengthen their positions.

The Ethiopian Foreign Ministry held a briefing on the situation in the Tigray region on Tuesday with Ambassadors from fifteen countries that are members of the United Nations Security Council.

Last week, the UN Security Council discussed the situation in the northern part of the country under AOB. The council almost had a position against Ethiopia had it not been for China, India and Russia, countries that voted “no” to a resolution against Ethiopia.

Neighboring Kenya and the African country of Niger, among others, voted against Ethiopia during last week’s session.

The UN Security Council will have another meeting this week to discuss Ethiopia. The Spokesperson encouraged members to side with Ethiopia.

The Ethiopian government has come under great pressure from state and non-state actors for alleged “massacres” and humanitarian inaccessibility in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, which the government dismisses as unfounded.

The government argued that international humanitarian actors have unrestricted access to the region and humanitarian aid has been distributed to more than 4.1 million people in the region.
