- Minecraft for PS4 will receive support for PlayStation VR in September.
- Mojang announced on Monday that PS4 players will be able to play Minecraft in VR this month – the complete game with its own set of options and settings.
- Sony will make a new PS VR announcement every day this week.
Everyone eagerly awaits more details on the PS5, from price to release date, but instead, Sony has chosen to focus on another piece of hardware this week: PlayStation VR. On Monday morning, Sony announced on the PlayStation Blog which would be showing off new PS VR games and updates to existing PS VR games throughout the week, and the first major announcement is that Minecraft for PS4 is finally getting full PS VR support.
According to Mojang’s Robert Carpenter, PS VR support is getting “the finishing touches” for its release and will be rolled out as a patch for the main game before the end of the month. If you own Minecraft or buy it sometime in the future, you will automatically get PS VR support, no additional purchase required. Of course, you will need to have a PlayStation VR headset to experience the feature, but you probably knew that.
Mojang emphasizes that this is not a simplified version of the game or a specific VR mode. Minecraft on PS VR it’s the exact same game you’ve been playing on PS4 for years, with the same blocks, enemies, weapons, and features. If you can do it without virtual reality Minecraft, you can also do it in the PS VR version.
Of course, there are some additions to virtual reality. Minecraft more enjoyable for those who choose to play that way, as Mojang says he has added “a ton of new settings and guidance”. There are also two separate modes to choose from: Immersive and Living Room. Mojang does not explain what these modes entail, but Minecraft Gear VR Edition also had an immersive mode, so it seems likely that the PS VR version will be the same.
“Even though the pandemic adjusted the way we developed Minecraft, development in Minecraft for PS VR has been relatively drama-free. I dare say it, even normal, ”explains Carpenter. “The Minecraft x PSVR experience itself is based on the Minecraft VR technology that we developed for other virtual reality platforms a few years ago. SkyBox Labs took that and has been working its magic to convert and optimize existing technology for PS VR. And of course our friends at Sony have been there all the time to guide us because they know their system better than anyone. “
In addition to sharing the Minecraft Sony is also discounting some of its most popular PS VR games as of Wednesday, including Astro Bot Rescue Mission, Farpointand Tetris effect.
